Changes to Grapevine

Hope you have enjoyed your (trial) free delivery to your mailbox – courtesy of our regular sponsors and generous donors who help to make Grapevine possible. However, inexpensive local advertising is not sufficient to cover costs into the future. With so many local volunteers dependent on the generosity of our businesses I’m sure we would all be pleased to support Grapevine in our own individual way, by purchasing our hard copy at the Handy Mart or Allan Gray from April. Many thanks in advance for your continuing support. Email is still free

Grapevine still comes free, of course, every month in glorious colour to your e-mailbox, on Facebook or Cowra Community News website. This reduces the cost of printing and the strain on local funds (not to mention saving the forests!) Please send your email address to gooloogonggrapevine@hotmail.com if you wish to receive it automatically. Mail subscription

Don’t worry you out-of-towners who don’t have email. We know you want to hear the news on the Grapevine! Register to receive your copy by mail for your donation of $10 to cover your six month subscription (to cover printing, postage and handling).

Beyond the Limits Some Irish Pioneers

Believe it or not Gooloogong’s beginnings are, in a way, deeply rooted in Irish rebellion! Many Irish transported under the ‘Insurrection Act’ were daring to take a stand against harsh inequality and oppressive foreign rule in their country. Goolagong

Squatting here before 1840, and purchasing a lease on unoccupied land ‘beyond the limits of location’ was farm worker Edmond (Edward) Sheahan, transported with 10 others from Limerick in 1824 on the Prince Regent for taking a stand against the debt collector. His 22,400 acre run in the fledgling Lachlan District, named Goolagong, was his home until his death in 1860.

Kangarooby

Wicklow man Peter Dwyer took a Pastoral Lease on 600 acres naming it Kanagarooby (or Kangaroobay). Peter came free in 1828 on the Marquis of Huntley to join his father Michael Dwyer. Michael was an Irish hero, known both here and in Ireland as the ‘Wicklow Chief’. Michael

was

transported to the colony for his leadership in the 1798 Irish Rebellion. Leaving to establish the Fitzroy Arms Public House in Canowindra, Peter then joined his brother John at Bungendore at the Harp Inn. These proud men (and their feisty women) were not the landed gentry with free land and labour, managed from a comfortable city residence. They fought political and social adversity head-on and for that were expelled from their families across the world. But here, through true grit, they pushed the boundaries beyond the safe, settled districts, battling drought, flood, bushrangers and isolation to

Better Tip Services?

Many residents are expressing dissatisfaction with the 2 hours a fortnight Tip opening currently

available. The

alternative is an unreasonable round trip. Some without weekly garbage collection depend on the tip to dispose of everyday household waste (including perishables). Missing the fortnightly window of opportunity means living with waste for a month. This is an unacceptable health risk and has likely been the motivation for a spate of roadside dumpings. Do you think Council could better serve Gooloogong village with an improved service? If you agree, please sign the petition at the Handy Mart and Alan Gray’s.

DistrictNurse

Due to technical difficulties with the Gooloogong phone please contact your District Nurse through the Canowindra Health Service on 6344 1314 or mobile 0427104910. If you leave a message we will aim to give next day’s service. If you require assistance of the nurse please be aware that no doctor’s referral is needed. Even if you feel it is a minor problem, it is better to be seen and avoid possible ongoing problems or infection.
