NIH also offers a predoctoral fellowship (http://grants1.nih.gov/
grants/guide/pa-files/PA-07-002.html), but this is only for students
at the thesis stage of their education. These applications are due
in December.
For PhD students in statistics who expect to graduate within
the next year, NSF’s Division of Mathematical Sciences offers the
Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (MSPRF).
These fellowships provide a monthly stipend for two academic years
and three summers. (For the academic year stipend, it can either be
taken as a full stipend for two academic years or as a full stipend for one
academic year and a half stipend for two academic years.) The fellow-
ships require advance planning, because the application requires know-
ing who the applicant will work with during the time of the fellowship.
(This can be changed after the first year with the approval of the NSF
program director.) The deadline for these applications is in October.
