• Lock your door at all times, even if you are just stepping out for a minute. Most dorm thefts happen during the day, so even a casual stroll down the hall to chat with a friend can give a thief an opportunity to grab your stuff if your door is unlocked.

• Don’t walk away from your stuff even for a minute. Thefts often happen in public places such as libraries and dining halls, so leaving your laptop to walk to the other side of the room is a bad idea.

• Buy a laptop security cable and use it. A combination lock could be enough to turn a thief away.
