CONFUSED ABOUT ARENA FOOTING?

• What to look for when choosing an Arena Footing: 1) Does the footing offer any support as you walk through it? 2) Do your horse’s hooves sink or do they make a slight imprint? 3) Are they staying on top of the footing like when walking on the shoreline at the beach?

CONCLUSION: Arena footing should not give way when walking. It should remain tight and moist with the proper moisture level at around 23%.

• Footing Red Flags: Whether looking to move to a new facility or showing at a new venue, use caution if you see a lot of dust or any rocks or pebbles around the arena.

• How do ideal footing surfaces vary for English riding disciplines (show jumping vs. dressage, for instance)?

1) Jumpers move quickly and use a lot of force for takeoff and landing; as well as turning. It is important that the horse feels secure that the footing will not give way on either the approach or the landing.

2) Pleasure horses and hunter horses can go with a softer feeling footing that still offers support with cushion and rebound energy.

3) Dressage riders, at a higher level, like a firmer surface and many like a cushiony feel with higher rebound energy. This can be achieved with GGT Footing’s elastic blends.

• Arena Footing Maintenance Tips: How often to water, drag, and resurface? 1) Watering should be done every day, sometimes twice a day if in a very dry climate.

2) Most professional arenas are groomed daily, sometimes twice if there’s a very busy lesson or training program. It is important to use the proper groomer designed for the surface that you have, i.e. sand or textiles. GGT Footing offers custom recipes of arena surfaces according to the client’s needs and now offers arena groomers for a wide variety of applications.
