Volunteer of the Year

BY TYLER ANDERSON COMPETITIONS COORDINATOR

Vern Hayden Named 2014 USA Shooting Volunteer of the Year

USA Shooting would like

to congratulate Vern Hayden as the 2014 Volunteer of the Year. Vern has worked sev- eral USAS Shotgun events over the years, ranging from World Cups to the National Junior Olympic Shotgun Championships.

Highlights

from 2014 include refer- eeing for the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup USA on his home range in Tucson, Arizo- na and serving as the Chief Referee at the Fall Selection match in Tillar, Arkansas. Vern lived in California,

previously working as a me- chanical sales representa- tive to the food industry be- fore moving to his home in Arizona 30 years ago. Vern is very involved with

the Tucson Trap & Skeet club (TTSC) where he has served as a board member for over nine years. He enjoys plan- ning and setting the future course for the club, as well as working with the youth programs at TTSC. When asked what his fa- vorite part of volunteering

with USA Shooting was, Vern stated, “The youth. I love watching the kids progress in their

shooting careers

and personal life.” He con- sistently mentioned the sat- isfaction he receives from in- stilling integrity into a young person’s life. Vern started volunteering

in 2005 due to his grandson Luis “Taz” Gloria’s involve- ment in skeet shooting. Without a doubt, the pas- sion instilled in Vern came from his grandson. He has mentioned how proud he is and what a joy it has been to watch him progress through the ranks. Taz, a mem- ber of our National Junior Team, speaks very highly of his grandfather by saying, “There is not a man in the world I would trade my grand- father for. I was blessed with the most amazing father fi gure, coach and friend a person could have dreamed of having in their life. He has heavily devoted countless hours to me and my desire to taste gold.” Vern hopes to be there someday to see

his grandson represent the United States of America in the Olympic Games. Vern also commends his

fellow volunteers and enjoys working with them at USAS events. He says that they are very easy to work with and they have taught him a lot about the sport and working with the shooters. Vern considers them to be family. Pete Carson, Direc- tor of Competitions with USA Shooting said “Vern is a key component in our volunteer pool. He is highly knowledge- able and brings with him a positive attitude and amaz- ing outlook. We are extreme- ly grateful to have such a fantastic volunteer.”

Without a doubt, the suc- cess of USA Shooting events lies heavily on these volun- teers; and we are honored to recognize Vern for his com- mitment to the sport. If interested in volunteer-
