Chilled Beams 21
air flows, performance levels and the demands of the space to be heated and cooled is crucial.
A HVAC system can be a vital aspect in a building and significantly impact the health and productivity of occupants.
With more buildings pushing design boundaries, making huge creative leaps in the use of textures and technologies and combining those with the need for aesthetics, our expertise as manufacturers is being required at a much earlier stage in projects, to ensure that the correct selection and design parameters can be achieved.
Chilled beams are incredibly flexible and we have been involved in some very high profile and demanding projects. Although the core components and configuration of a chilled beam are never compromised, we can design and incorporate a myriad of additional requirements such as custom casings and the inclusion of lighting and other services.
Sustainability was a key aim in the design of the iconic Library of Birmingham and energy efficiencies were addressed with a careful selection of materials and technologies. With a central open atrium and side floors, a solution was designed that successfully combined functionality and
performance with the aesthetic needs of the library. The beams followed the contours of the room’s perimeter and were supplied in a matt black finish so that they were not visible through the lattice style ceiling or through the perforated grilles.
And by carefully configuring the casings to direct and control the airflow, the chilled beams were deployed to provide a comfortable environment in the library’s open atrium and stairways as well.
2020
Waterloo has always taken a pragmatic view that legislation opens up opportunities to develop new products and solutions for customers.
New legislation and tighter control are inevitable and green buildings are rapidly becoming the norm with measurable results that can show exactly how buildings are performing.
The European Commission believes that the majority of energy saving potential is in the building sector, so it is crucial to improve the quality of building stock to achieve the EU’s 2020 target. Chilled beams have a role to play in helping building designers and owners reduce their energy consumption and deliver better, smarter and comfortable indoor environments.
