Left: Africans living in the Panhandle enjoy sharing culture and perspective through the free community festival. Photos by Beth McKee

“Azuma helped me understand life in America better. We shared our traditions and learned about life here at the same time.”

- Manasseh Matengenzara, Azuma planning committee member Price Philip and Dianna Brown, TCEC members and Guymon residents,

said attending Azuma changed their perspective. “Africans acted as hosts at Azuma,” Dianna Brown said. “They fed us

fi rst, seated us fi rst and a lot of them greeted us. After sharing their food and hearing what they’ve been through before coming here, I always speak to them now. I can’t wait for this year’s celebration.” Her husband Philip Brown said, “It was a great event. Seeing the Africans with their families really helped me to identify with them.” Several local churches came forward to sponsor the Azuma celebration and help on the planning committee. Sandra Castillo, Vicar at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, was new to the community when her church received a fl ier about the event. “We welcome diversity at our church,” said Castillo, a TCEC member.

“We sponsored the event to begin a path toward a more diverse congrega- tion. I volunteered for the planning committee to meet new people and establish rapport with the community.” Castillo said Guymon’s Azuma celebration had a spark of excitement because it was the fi rst time Africans in Guymon were given the oppor- tunity to showcase their culture. “Thanks to the gift of leadership from Africans who stepped forward on the planning committee, Azuma was an authentic, joyous and color- ful event. Guymon community members gained greater insight and un- derstanding about why many Africans had to leave their homeland to come here to create a better future. Many of them faced persecution, genocide and the loss of family members in their home countries. Some will never be able to return. We’re building a more cohesive and stronger local community here.”

A mix of people from around the world with diverse backgrounds and cultures are living and working in Guymon. They’ve become part of this community they now call ‘home.’ For more than 15 years, the city of Guymon has hosted a Fiesta Day in September as a celebration of Hispanic heritage with traditional Mexican folk dancing, food and more. “We need to host an Asian festival next,” Johnson said. “Celebrating the heritage of our community members ties us closer together and makes us stronger.”
