UPLC System Drives LC-MS Analyses to New Levels The new Waters®

ACQUITY UPLCRM-Class System is an industry-first nano- to microscale UltraPerformance LCR (UPLCR) system rated for 15,000 psi operation. Coupled to Waters’ mass spectrometers, the system delivers the sensitivity to quantify and to identify vanishingly small concentrations of key molecules.

The ACQUITY UPLC M-Class System is ideally suited for a broad range of applications including proteomics, metabolic profiling, metabolite identification and pharmacokinetic studies. Its new 15k psi-capable ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Columns tap the potential of sub-2-µm particle technology, yielding faster separations, greater peak capacities and increased levels of sensitivity.

“When scientists doing proteomics or investigating new biopharmaceuticals talk to us about the work they do, they often speak of protein coverage or being able to quantify and identify incredibly small amounts of key molecules usually in the presence of much higher amounts of other molecules. This is difficult work without the appropriate tools. With the ACQUITY UPLC M-Class System, they will have the capability to peer into the unseen and achieve their research goals,” said Art Caputo, President of the Waters Division. “As an LC inlet to mass spectrometers, the ACQUITY UPLC M-Class System empowers more scientists to reliably employ microscale chromatography in order to solve their most complex analytical challenges.”

Customisable Water Purification Systems

Elga LabWater, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies company released the PURELAB® Chorus range of laboratory water systems which can be assembled to suit application, budget andlaboratory configuration. Particularly well suited for use in laboratories with limited laboratory space and those that must retain precise control over dispensing methods and storage options, Elga LabWater has a presence in over 60 countries across the globe, with PURELAB® systems being rolled out throughout.

Chorus

Chorus 1 produces the highest inorganic water purity available through advanced PureSure® deionisation, which removes even trace amounts of ions capable of interfering with ultrasensitive analysis methods such as HPLC, Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Atomic Emission Spectrometry or ICP Mass Spectrometry. The integrated ultrafiltration/microfiltration, full spectrum UV treatment and full recirculation also guarantees complete removal of endotoxins, proteins, nucleases and particulates.

Chorus 2 is the optimal fit for those applications requiring reliable, high purity water with good organic, inorganic and microbial control, but where ultrapure water is not essential and

Chorus 3, offering the lowest cost of ownership provides high flow rates of up to 120 litres per hour, all while being simple to operate and easy to maintain.

Carbon-13 NMR Benchtop Capability Arrives

The Spinsolve Carbon launched by Magritek and the latest addition to the Spinsolve family of benchtop NMR spectrometer has been designed to meet the specific needs of pharmaceutical and medicinal chemists, synthetic chemists, academics focused on organic chemistry education and researchers working on the structure elucidation of organic molecules.

Spinsolve Carbon offers users 1D 1H, 19F and 13C experiments that use standard 5 mm NMR tubes. 13C experiments include spectral editing with DEPT, 2D direct

HETCOR experiment and 2D indirect experiments such as HMQC and HMBC. For proton 2D COSY and homonuclear j-resolved spectroscopy are offered along with T1 and T2 relaxation experiments, Convenient and robust to use, these instruments have low running costs as no cryogens are required and they are virtually maintenance-free.

Simple, one-button software operation with minimal user controlled parameters coupled to an intuitive graphical interface makes the system easy to operate by anyone from students to research chemists. The system may be automated and integrated closely with the industry leading MNova data processing software from Mestrelab for reaction monitoring applications.

On-Detector Electronics Optimise Resolution

Edax a leader in X-ray microanalysis and electron diffraction instrumentation, introduced a new series of detectors for the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) into its successful Octane Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) family. The Octane TEM Series offers modules from 30mm2

to 100mm2

and provides solid angles up to1.1 steradian. With the market’s only on-detector electronics, Octane TEM SDDs can produce resolutions as low as 123 eV and are optimised for low- energy X-ray collection. Additionally, the Octane TEM detectors are specially designed not to require the typical protective window in front of the module. This windowless system maximises x-ray collection and greatly improves the effective solid angle. “The windowless design offers the double benefit of eliminating the absorption of light elements and removing the need for a solid angle-reducing support grid,” commented Mike Coy, Global Marketing Manager for Edax. “This results in a significant increase in detection efficiency, increasing both light element sensitivity and overall count rates”.

Key Break-Through Simplifies Prep Stage

Anasys Instruments featured its nanoIR2™ second generation AFM-based IR spectroscopy platform incorporating top-side illumination. This eliminates the prior need to prepare samples on a ZnSe prism and enables measurements on a more diverse set of samples including semiconductor devices, thin films, nanocomposites, data storage samples, minerals, tissue sections and polymer blends. Additionally, the nanoIR2 provides the new resonance-enhanced mode which significantly increases the sensitivity of the technique and enables AFM-IR measurements on samples of sub-20nm in thickness.

The nanoIR2 system combines the nanoscale spatial resolution capabilities of a powerful full- featured atomic force microscope (AFM) with infrared spectroscopy’s unrivalled ability for chemical characterisation and identification. It provides spectra that demonstrate excellent correlation with bulk FTIR spectra and can be imported into standard FTIR databases for sample component identification.

Users of the nanoIR2 platform can quickly survey regions of a sample via AFM and then rapidly acquire high-resolution chemical spectra at the selected regions or acquire high-resolution chemical images at a fixed wavelength. Mechanical and thermal properties, such as local thermal transitions, may also be mapped with nanoscale resolution.
