10 QUESTIONS WITH... VICKY LOPEZ

Each issue we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Vicky Lopez, Co-founder and Director at De-Ice.

Q3

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS?

Busy, busy, busy. No, I would probably describe myself as hardworking, loyal and independent.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I was the secretary in the

marketing department of a sports club in London. I wasn’t overly interested in marketing but the sports club had, at the time, the UK’s only telecourt – a glass squash court that allowed decent coverage of games on TV – so I got involved in dealing with TV and high profile squash players.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FM INDUSTRY?

I was running a landscaping business with my husband, Mark. We were approached to provide gritting services as a subcontractor initially. The work really took off, and we saw the opportunity to manage our own contacts in the gritting and snow clearance business. The rest is history...

IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUR PAST SELF ONE PIECE OF

ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? To believe more in yourself. There are often times when you doubt yourself, but sometimes I think you just need to follow your heart. If you work hard enough and dig deep, you will always succeed.

WHAT SHOULD FMS BE DOING THAT THEY’RE NOT?

I think many should work harder to build better relationships with their suppliers – the people and companies they often depend on. I also think it's vital for them to provide ongoing and comprehensive feedback to suppliers on the services they provide.

Q8

WHICH THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD

YOU INVITE TO YOUR ULTIMATE

DINNER PARTY? Elvis, because I'd love to hear all about his life, and he is my mum’s favourite. Stephen Fry, for his vast intelligence, wit and experience, and Margaret Thatcher, because she was a remarkable lady and had a massive influence on the country when I was growing up.

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE

FM INDUSTRY? Creating real partnerships with suppliers, based on the feedback I have already alluded to. Education, to improve standards in the sector, and corporate social responsibility – everyone has a role to play.

Fasset’s Gary Medlow asks… Q10 Q6 Q7

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?

I read as much and as often as I possibly can. There is nothing better than sitting down with a book and a cup of tea or, better still, a glass of wine!

WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST RECORD ON YOUR DESERT

ISLAND DISC? Savage Garden’s ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply’. It was our wedding song, and a record I have always loved.

WHAT IS TOP OF YOUR FM ENVIRONMENTAL

AGENDA IN 2014? Sustainability. It is the 'buzz word', and something that I believe will have a central platform at The Facilities Show in June. Our responsibility as suppliers and consumers should be to fully understand the impact our decisions have on the environment and explore the possibility of a more sustainable option. We will be looking closely at this over the summer whilst in planning mode for next season.
