The introduction of the 3M™ Scotchgard™ Resilient Floor Protector has put an added gloss on public perceptions of hygiene, at Clane Hospital in County Kildare Ireland, by delivering clean and shiny fl oors that refl ect the hospital’s high standards. Few environments place such high demands on hygiene and cleanliness as operating theatres, so when Clane wanted to improve public perceptions about fl oor cleanliness, they turned to Industrial Cleaning Equipment (ICE) for help.

ICE recommended that the hospital trial the new Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector from 3M on one of its theatre corridors, where the fl oors were prone to scratching and staining. The hospital was so impressed with its performance that it has since applied the fl oor protector throughout the three operating theatres, corridors and recovering room, resulting in glossy fl oors which not only look much cleaner, but are quicker, easier and cheaper to maintain.

“The melamine fl oors at Clane Hospital were being scrubbed and sanitised every day but their appearance suggested otherwise,” explained Sue Poole, Marketing Manager for 3M Building and Commercial Services. “The problem lay with the traditional acrylic fl oor fi nish they were using which was susceptible to scuffi ng and yellowing. Not only did the fl oors have to be chemically stripped and reapplied at regular intervals – a costly and inconvenient process – but they would quickly revert to looking dull and worn.”

To solve the problem, a contractor was appointed to strip the multiple layers of old acrylic coating using 3M™ Scotch-Brite™ Surface Preparation Pads. Two coats of Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector were then applied to the clean melamine, creating a tough, protective barrier with a high-shine fi nish.

fl oor fi nishes when tested under laboratory conditions. So, Clane can expect to enjoy the benefi ts for up to a year with minimal maintenance, but unlike conventional coatings which require chemical stripping, Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector can be spot-repaired with simple scrubbing, making isolated scratches and unsightly scuff marks very quick and economical to remove.

Using Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector has enabled Clane Hospital to signifi cantly reduce the time and cost required to achieve clean and shiny fl oors that refl ect its high standards, and Clane’s Maintenance Manager, Pat Mulhall, has been thrilled with the results. He said: “Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector is a 100% improvement on what we had before. Now, our theatre fl oors are not only spotlessly clean, they look it too!”
