World News New Crown Mats And Matting Website Focuses On Facts


Crown Mats and Matting, one of the oldest and largest mat manufacturing companies in the US, recently launched a new website. Web designers focused on making the site user-friendly and attractive, but, according to Dennis Knapp, National Sales Director for Crown Mats and Matting, the site’s informational and educational features are what make it unique.


She said: “End-customers, and even many distributors, are unaware of just how effective mats can be at,


for instance, reducing a facility’s soil load. So what we did is build very easy, but also very revealing, calculators that address this issue.” Using the dirt calculator, online visitors are asked questions such as how many entries a building has, about how many people use each entry every day, and how many days per week the facility is used. Then, simply click on ‘show results’ and the calculator goes to work.


In addition to the soil load calculator, the new site also offers a ‘Buy vs.


Rent’ calculator. “This is always a big question for property managers – whether it's more cost effective to buy mats or just rent them,” added Dennis. “Using the ‘Buy vs. Rent’ calculator, the facts and fi gures speak for themselves.”


Plans for the new website include product-related videos, articles, news stories, and other mat- related information, to help visitors learn more about the value of high performance matting systems.

While it has received only limited news coverage, many major sports teams and sports venues in the US are getting greener, according to Stephen Ashkin, President of The Ashkin Group and a board member with the Green Sports Alliance.


The Cleveland Browns football team is testing the use of an anaerobic digester as a way to divert waste from its home fi eld, FirstEnergy Stadium, and turn it into energy. “Anaerobic digesters have been used in the past to turn cow manure


into methane, which can be used to produce electricity,” said Ashkin. “If these tests pan out, it’s possible the Browns will produce enough electricity to power several homes for several years.”


Ashkin added that this is just one example of how teams, stadiums, and other sports facilities are becoming greener and more sustainable. Other examples he offered include:


• The MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with its 1,350 solar panels installed to power its LED light displays.


• The MetLife Stadium is also converting all waste oil to biodiesel fuel and donating leftover food, food scraps, mounds of paper products left after games, as well as glass and plastic to recycling centers.


• The Seattle Seahawks have installed the largest solar energy system in the state of Washington on their CenturyLink Field.


• The Portland Trail Blazers have cut fuel emissions at their Moda Center by 50% since 2008, and saved $3.3million in utility costs in fi ve years.


• In a relatively short time, the Philadelphia Eagles have diverted three million pounds of waste ending up in landfi lls and taken measures to reduce electricity – enough to power more than 7,000 homes.


“It is really quite amazing what is happening behind the scenes,” commented Ashkin. “It is important for this information to come out; the sports industry in the US is huge, and when fans see what their teams and venues are doing to green their operations, it encourages them to follow suit.”
