Survey Highlights Importance Of Cleaning Efficiency


Better use of time is the most significant benefit of formal training for cleaners, according to a national survey carried out by a leading healthcare industry blog site.


The cleanleanhealthcare blog asked its readers what they thought was the main advantage of training cleaners within the healthcare industry. Of those surveyed, 68% said it was better use of time, while 22% believed the most important benefit was more effective cleaning practices. The remaining 10% thought it was most significant that training resulted in less slips, trips and falls.


Brian Boll, Systems Director at Jigsaw Cleaning Systems which runs the site, said: “Time is of the essence in the cleaning industry, and it is little surprise that the better use of time option was chosen by the majority of respondents as the most significant advantage of training. Although hospital cleanliness is often put under the media microscope, the recent Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE)


programme, found the national average score for cleanliness in hospitals to be 95.7%.


“The real challenge now is how we can maintain these high standards and increase efficiency at the same time. It’s unrealistic to think this is something that can be achieved by simply expecting cleaners to work harder and faster. Formal training leads to higher skillsets, increased motivation and improved confidence. This usually leads to a more productive workforce which can achieve better results in less time.”


Southampton General Hospital recently hit headlines when controversial plans to slash 48 hours of cleaning per day were announced; the proposals were later shelved by health bosses, but indicated the extent to which hospitals are being put under pressure to economise. Efficiencies in cleaning practice could lead to a reduction in NHS cleaning spend, which last year was up £40.7m to £937.9m.

Harrison Wipes, the specialist nonwoven wiping cloth manufacturer which has been trading since 1891, has appointed Simon Dunster as Sales Manager for their Hygiene Wiping Division.


Simon was previously Sales Manager of the Food Service Southern UK at Solo Cup Europe for the last five years, giving him the necessary experience to move successfully from the food service packaging industry to the food service wiping industry.


Prior to working at Solo Cup Europe, he was an Account Manager at Smith Anderson Group, one of the market leaders in paper bags to the food service, pharmacy and retail sector. Prior to that, he held a

position at Swan Mill and Huhtamaki, a global manufacturer of consumer and food service packaging.


Stephen Harrison, Managing Director of Harrison Wipes, said: “Simon will be an invaluable new resource to the company to further develop our business in the food service sector.”


The recruitment of Simon is part of a new strategy at Harrison Wipes to give better focused expertise to key industry sector customers. Therefore, at the same time that Simon became Sales Manager within the Hygiene Wiping Division, Clive Smith who has worked for Harrison Wipes for over 15 years, took up a new role as Sales Manager for the Industrial Wiping Division.
