Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“One of the best-coached teams in the country… The class of the West is forming rivalries with Denver, USC and Oregon this year. Colorado to come… They’re an interesting team to watch with creative defensive looks… They have great athletes coming back on the attacking end. Rachel Ozer is a solid playmaker with great hands and real quick feet… They are going to be really dangerous this year.”

Key Game Although Georgetown

probably is the biggest challenge on the schedule, Denver is Stanford’s main concern. The Pioneers won the MPSF regular-season championship last year.

Hannah Farr

hen Amy Bokker arrived at Stanford as the Cardinal women’s lacrosse coach in 2009, the main

focus of her “five-year plan” was to put the program on the map nationally. Consider that goal accomplished. After guiding the Cardinal to its first-

ever NCAA tournament victory in her fifth season in 2013, she now will begin the next phase: sustaining success and building on it. “We just want respect for us and our

part of the country and what we’re doing,” Bokker

“Especially

recruiting, if we could lure some of the best players in the country to come out and play at a school that’s academically and

phenomenal. “Stanford has a

great reputation across

the

country, but lacrosse was a little unknown.” Prior to Bokker’s tenure, Stanford

had been to just one NCAA tournament, in 2006 when it became the first team from the West to qualify. Last season, the Cardinal won its

eighth MPSF tournament title in nine years, made its third NCAA tournament

appearance in five years. It avenged a regular-season loss to Notre Dame to advance past the first round for the first time in the program’s 18-year history. The Cardinal, which lost to

Northwestern in that second-round matchup, finished 14-6 a year after finishing 8-10. Seven of the 12 starters were freshmen and sophomores. Stanford accomplished its goals with a fast-paced game centered on calculated risks. Six players scored at least 25 goals. Just two players graduated from last

year’s team. The Cardinal also added nine freshmen to the roster to improve overall depth, but Bokker looks forward to seeing how more experience helps in big games this year. Stanford’s youth caught up to it at the end of the regular season. The Cardinal eked out a win over Cal in the finale, two days after losing to a UC Davis team that finished sixth in the conference. “We need to remain competitive with ourselves, focus on the high standard we want to play at and keep that positive energy throughout the whole season — a standard where we are bringing the Stanford game we want to play to every game,” Bokker said.
