The Acadians are reported to have sought refuge here after their deportation from Acadia in 1755. Just over 600 people currently live in Miquelon and most were born here. Their parents were likely born in the archipelago as well—Miquelon’s ancestry is mainly Acadian and Basque. The name Miquelon evolved from the name Michael and is thought to be of Basque origin.
