iamichi Electric Cooperative members received a good report on their electric cooperative at the co-op annual meeting on October 5.

While meeting attendance was 117 members shy of an official quorum, it didn't stop co-op officials from sharing news of KEC's financial year, system improvements, and plans for growth and expansion.

Kiamichi Electric CEO Jim Jackson reported a solid financial standing for the co-op despite a decrease in 2012 sales revenue. "Sales of electricity were down by $468,355 over that of the previous year, primarily due to mild weather," Jackson said. Such fluctuations are expected in the utility business, he added, and do not affect the day-to day-operations of Kiamichi Electric or its quality of service.

Kiamichi Electric spent $22.7 million on electricity purchased from KAMO Power and Western Farmer's Electric Cooperative.

"The cost of wholesale power continues to be the largest expense we have by far," Jackson noted. Regulations from Federal Energy Resource Commission (FERC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are increasing labor and equipment expenses for wholesale power suppliers that are driving costs up, he said.

KEC noted substantial improvement in the number of outages compared to previous years. A recent survey ranked KEC 16th out of 26 electric co-ops in reported outages, a substantial improvement over previous years. New outage management software will help KEC improve outage response time by pinpointing the source of trouble before a repair crew is dispatched.

Jackson noted that KEC scored 82 out of 100 on a recent customer satisfaction survey conducted by Associated Electric Cooperative. As a group, co-ops scored 83 on the satisfaction survey, while investor-owned utilities scored 77.
