Wiring is a necessary part of most lighting fixtures, but how to manage and simplify the wiring is a challenge faced by many designers. There are of course a multitude of connector solutions available on the market but finding the best solutions can be a challenge in itself.


This is where Phoenix Contact can help, especially if consulted at the early stages of design when more solutions are available for consideration. The possibilities can seem


endless but with some careful consideration the device connector can enhance the fixture and simplify the design and installation.(Image below)


For this case study, we will look at the challenge of supplying mains power to a lighting fixture as part of a ring main circuit. The connector has to satisfy two requirements: simplicity of final assembly in production, and easy of on-site installation.


(Image Top Right) The product we have specified is the PTDA which offers twin spring cage connections per pole, thus reducing the space needed in the fixture and simplifying the connections to the ring main circuit. The PTDA is available in two pitch options, 3.5 and 5.0mm, and from 2 to 16 poles as standard. The double push-in connections allow loop-in loop-out


wiring per pole offering fast connection technology and space saving design. Rated up to 400 volts, 24 amps, the PTDA is ideally suited to mains connected building automation device solutions. For the internal connections several possibilities are available. The PTDA is available with pins for direct soldering to the PCB, or as a pluggable connector for use with standard pin strips. The pin strip solution can simplify final assembly by incorporating the connector within the housing, while the PCB soldered version can be mounted on horizontal or vertically alighted sub straights thanks to the symmetrical design of the PTDA.


For error free wiring, Phoenix Contact offer the PTDA with different colour slices which can be specified by you to match the incoming wiring. This simplifies installation of the device and reduces the chance of mistakes. Other features and options include: custom marking to further aid wiring, keying for the pin strip versions, pitch spacers for increased creepage distances, screw driver actuated conductor release buttons, and test points.(Image Bottom Right)
