3 Reggiani Takes Flight

The Emirates Aviation Experience takes visitors on an interactive journey into the world of flight.

The interactive journey includes four commercial flight simulators and 3D holograms. There is also a high definition video wall as well as a full sized nose cone of an A380 Airbus. The design brief came from the creative agency The Pulse Group. Gary Collins Lighting Design selected Reggiani luminaires for each area. The venue also has a mezzanine and café/retail area, so the lighting requirements vary considerably throughout the building. Gary Collins selected a range of luminaire types from fixed to adjustable to track-mounted, including LED Bisio spotlights, Mosaicos, LowLEDs and both LED and ceramic metal halide (CMH) versions of Revios to meet these varying requirements.

He used both LED and CMH versions of the Revios luminaire to enhance design continuity between the different areas whilst also exploiting the performance of the different light sources. By using the patented IOS system, Reggiani was able to deliver the right ambient mood lighting in the different zones by selecting the appropriate beam width, light intensity and tone. The inherent flexibility of the IOS system also enables the scheme to be

easily adapted to new requirements in the future. Different versions of the Bisio spotlights have been used. 26W Bisios with a colour temperature of 4000K have also been used to deliver an average lux level of 1,000 lux on the A380 nose cone, while in the café and retail areas spotlights using warmer 3000K lamps were used to create a more relaxing space. This approach has been applied with LowLED fittings to meet the designer’s specification. In the café/retail area 10W LowLEDs provide an average 300-350 lux, except the counter area where the levels of 800 lux are achieved to assist with preparation. LowLEDs have also been used in the corridor leading to the flight simulators to illuminate the low ceiling.
