Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express musical exploded onto the South Africa theatre scene in July 2013 at The Mandela, Joburg Theatre in Johannesburg. Produced by the theatre’s Executive Producer, Bernard Jay, directed by Janice Honeyman and specified by Lighting Designer Declan Randall, three of the leading lighting suppliers were involved in lighting this amazing production; ETC, Robe and Splitbeam.

ETC

The ETC Eos has claimed another first for the ETC family of lighting control products. Internationally acclaimed Lighting Designer Declan Randall decided to put the Eos to the test on the South African debut of Starlight Express on a specially adapted stage at the Joburg Theatre Complex, Johannesburg.

“I have been using the ETC Eos platform for almost four years now, so it was an easy decision for me to make to use the Eos for Starlight Express,” says Randall. Specified by Randall and supplied by ETC’s South African-based dealer Prosound, the system includes an Eos RPU (Remote Processor Unit) which will serve as backup and Net3 Gateways to run the eight DMX universes to support the high fixture count and data distribution required for the show. The desk also utilises a wireless Ethernet network hub for remote control.

Lighting Designer Declan Randall wove Robe moving lights into his intricate lighting design for the roller-skating Andrew Lloyd Webber musical ‘Starlight Express’ staged in The Mandela venue at the Joburg Theatre complex in downtown Johannesburg.

In the overhead lighting rig were 18 Robe ROBIN MMX Spots and 18 Robe ColorWash 700E ATs. The majority of the fixtures – which also included other moving lights, generic and LED fixtures - had to be rigged here due to the construction of the set design.

Gearhouse Splitbeam

The Splitbeam stockholding worked well for Randall’s fantastic design. He selected the Vari-Lite VL3500’s for their zoom and output as well as their versatile shuttering systems. According to Splitbeam’s Managing Director, Alistair Kilbee, Starlight has always been a larger-than-life kind of production and the scale on the South African version lives up to expectations. “For Splitbeam, this is a great opportunity to extend our knowledge working on a large musical.”
