FORBO’S ‘BACK TO THE FLOOR’ RECYCLING SCHEME SAVES

COST AND SPACE Flooring companies are saving on both disposal costs and on-site space through participation in ‘Forbo’s Back to the Floor’ scheme, which has reported steadily increasing collection volumes of its waste flooring off-cuts for recycling.

Material types accepted include Marmoleum, Flotex and smooth vinyl installation off-cuts, plus Eternal, Forbo’s core project vinyl range, as well as clean off-cuts from the Novilon and Novilux cushioned vinyl ranges. These are more residential brands, and all can be recycled back into new Forbo products. By the end of 2013, Forbo Tessera Carpet Tiles will also be part of the ‘Back to the Floor’ scheme.

For London-based J De Bruyn, one of the largest independent stockists of Forbo products in the UK, the scheme is working well and already saving both money and space on site. “It’s making a difference, obviously, and by recycling Marmoleum off-cuts we are definitely saving money on commercial disposal costs, although it is too early to say by exactly how much,” commented John Cordery, Director of J De Bruyn.

“Awareness of the scheme has grown and we are pleased with how ‘Back to the Floor’ is working for us,” he continued. “An added benefit is that membership has turned our thoughts

to related recycling activities. We’ll be pursuing the option of recycling our large cardboard cores, as this will reduce pressure on space and help to further enhance our green credentials.”

It’s a similar story at Kiely Carpets in Lydney, Gloucestershire, which is also reaping the twin benefits of saving on disposal costs and freeing up space, according to Grant Stephens, who manages the warehouse.

Grant said: “Having already filled several bags, we’ll be sending off another two soon. We recycle mainly smooth vinyl, and have probably already saved the equivalent of a skip in just a few months. We’re pleased with how it’s

progressing; fitters like the scheme as the bags give them somewhere to put the off-cuts and keep their work area tidy, and, of course, recycling is the right thing to do.”

‘Back to the Floor’ Scheme Co- ordinator, Matt Charlton concluded: “The scheme is going from strength to strength as more companies sign up, and regular volumes are being back- hauled to Forbo for recycling.”
