• The market is subject to a high level of import penetration, with price pressures intensified by lower cost imports.


• Over-supply exacerbated by falling sales.


• There has been an enduring popularity of carpet, particularly among homeowners, despite changing fashions in floorcoverings and home decor. The majority of households still own carpet in at least one room.


• Carpets, particularly replacements or upgrades, are a discretionary


purchase and are easily deferred in difficult economic times.


• There is a high level of reliance on a healthy housing market and a buoyant commercial sector.


• It is an extremely price sensitive market, and one in which profitability is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain with margins under constant pressure.


• There has been a shift in demand from highly-atterned natural wovens to plain synthetics.


• Rising wool prices have impacted on market prices.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE While imports have become increasingly significant in the UK, international trade has been affected by declining demand. Falling import values are evidence of the decline in demand for carpet, however the market is also influenced by exchange rate fluctuations, with the devaluation of Sterling against the Euro making imports from EU countries more expensive. Indications for 2012 are that the level of imports will remain close to 2010-11 levels, with values to mid-2012 around half of 2011’s £667m. Exports will be constrained by ongoing problems in the Eurozone, which impact demand.
