Local Youth Enjoy Colorado KEC sends two students to Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp each year

Kay Electric Coopera- tive sent Riley Pierce of Gar- ber and Tanner Bergman of Newkirk to Steamboat Springs, Colo., along with 32 other high school students from Kansas and Oklahoma. The students joined youth from Colorado, Oklahoma and Wyoming at the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp, July 13-19, 2013. “The camp activities, speak- ers and projects impacted me tremendously. The memories of the friends and relationships I created on this trip will have an everlasting impact on me,” stated Pearce.

“Kay Electric Cooperative is proud to support the Coop- erative Leadership Camp and send our youth to learn first-hand how coopera- tives function,” said Austin Partida, KEC’s Youth Tour Coordinator. “Our hope is that local students will gain some awareness of how our electric coopera- tive works and how impor- tant it is for the youth to be involved in our communi- ties.”

During their weeklong stay in Colorado, the students created their own cooperative, complete with a board of trustees and general manager selected 895904

by the students. Among other activities were legislative pre- sentations, a high voltage dis- play and a competition to build a transmission line from craft supplies. Students also toured Craig Power Plant and Trapper Mine.

“I was surrounded by very qual- ity people the entire week. The leadership skills I gained are something I will build on for my future.” Bergman stated. “These student leaders will be great representatives of both their electric cooperatives and their communities,” said Shana Read, Kansas Electric Cooperative youth director. “We are pleased to continue this tradition of taking Kansas and

Oklahoma youth to learn about electric cooperatives and our nation’s government.”

Pearce and Bergman were selected from a group of high school applicants by KEC. To win this trip, students were asked to write a 500-word es- say about a Creating a Cooper- ative. The essays were judged and the top eight essays were selected to give their essay in speech form at KEC’s An- nual Youth Tour Banquet. KEC sponsors the trip of two each year.
