currents ■ Driver Safety Pays Off

Class reduces premiums—and the possibility of accidents Enrolling in an AARP Safe Driving Class can pay off for Choctaw Electric members in more ways than one. Participants who complete the eight-hour class increase their safety awareness and are less apt to be involved in traffic accidents. They could also receive a discount on their insurance premium by providing their insurance provider with a AARP Safe Driving certificate of completion.

Brad Kendrick, Choctaw Electric Cooperative member services representative, is an AARP certified safe driving instructor. Kendrick says the course helps participants refine skills they have developed over years of driving. While the course was designed for drivers age 50 and over, drivers of all ages are encouraged to

enroll. “Anyone who drives will appreciate what they learn from this class,” he said..

The class will begin at 9 am on the following dates:

October 23, 2013 – Antlers CEC office November 20, 2013 – Hugo CEC office December 18, 2013 – Idabel CEC office

The cost for the course is $12 per person for AARP members, and $14 per person for others. Fees for the course are used to purchase teaching materials that participants may take home with them.

To enroll or for more details, please contact Brad Kendrick at 800-780-6486, ext. 248.

Don’t drive when tired. Symptoms include yawning, daydreaming, rubbing your eyes, missing exits, drifting from your lane, etc.

• •

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that driver fatigue is responsible for 100,000 police-reported crashes every year.

While most drowsy drivers are younger or shift workers, people with untreated sleep disorders have up to a seven-times increased risk of falling asleep at the wheel.

Avoid Drowsy Drivers—and Driving •

Avoid driving at times when most crashes occur due to drowsy driving, 11 pm - 6 am.

Watch for drivers that may be drifting from or leaving their lane of travel

• • •

Share driving with a partner, especially when you are feeling tired.

If both drivers are feeling tired, pull over to a rest area or safe parking area and take a short 20-minute nap. Then get out and stretch before resuming driving.

Coffee helps for short period, but if you have a sleep deficit,, only a nap or short period of sleep is effective.

Remember, that certain illnesses or the side effects of medications (either prescription or over-the-counter) can cause us to become drowsy.

Drinking even one alcoholic beverage can cause drowsiness; so can a heavy meal. Eat light.
