Women’s Ranch Rodeo was held at Hitch Pioneer Arena in Guymon. Open Cross Ranch, a not-for- profi t equine assisted learning organization near Guymon, organized the event. The Ranch Cowgirls Rodeo Association sanctioned the ranch rodeo.

“A ranch rodeo’s events are different than a regular rodeo,” Kalye Griffin, a Tri-County Electric Cooperative member who operates Open Cross Ranch and WKS Cattle Company, said. “The ranch rodeo celebrates our way of life so I enjoy the whole experience.” Griffi n said she hopes to make the Women’s Ranch Rodeo an annual event in Guymon. Eleven teams participated this year and events were branding, trailer loading, doctoring, sorting and tie down mugging.

Manager Rick Wayman is a huge help before and during the rodeo. He brings a crew of fi ve or six employees along with special equipment to put up the big screen television and scoreboard each year. During the rodeo, Wayman also opens and closes the gates for the contestants coming in and out of the arena. He does that on his own time. “The cooperative’s Serviceman Eric Leisher is also helpful when we have a problem with lights or need help locating a pole. Dispatcher Gina Horner serves on the committee. This rodeo is truly a cooperative effort.”

Rodeo is an American tradition dating back to

the days when ranching was common and people wanted to exhibit their skills. The friendly, family sport is thriving in the Oklahoma Panhandle, thanks in a small part to Tri-County Electric Cooperative.

“Sure, you compete against each other but you also have each other’s back,”
