Rusty Grissom,

Down to earth living by Tory Tedder

Hailing from District 3, the most active district in OEC's territory and encompassing Lexington, Slaughterville, and southeast Noble, Rusty Grissom is exactly like the members he represents—active. Surrounded by a crowd of 249 members, the majority

of whom showed up to support him in his bid for OEC District 3 Trustee, Grissom was first elected in a four-way race in 2001 at what remains the largest OEC district meeting in our history. At the time, he is quoted as saying, "I know I have a

lot to learn, but I'm eager to represent the members and community well." And that, he has done. Grissom hit the books, cramming the knowledge of a

65-year industry into his head and earning the Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) designation from NRECA. "It's an honor to serve these people," he says earnestly.

"But, it's a big responsibility. We study a lot to stay on top of industry trends, regulations—there's a lot." Grissom has earned the Board Leadership Certificate recognizing trustees who continue their education after achieving the CCD. One of Grissom's earliest goals as a trustee was to

encourage the co-op to develop initiatives to reduce peak- load. Grissom has been a supporter of end-use electricity efficiency, and continues to look for opportunities for members to gain control over their usage and bills. As OEC's delegate on the board of Western Farmers

Electric Cooperative, Grissom was instrumental in coordinating the geothermal validation study at OEC (see pg. 8). He is such a believer in the technology that he had one installed in his own home in August. "What's great about groundsource is you cut your usage

in half which lowers your bill," Grissom explains, "and you reduce demand, which saves money for the co-op—all without sacrificing comfort. Everyone wins." Grissom lives in Noble with his wife, Tammy, and owns

and operates a landscape nursery and greenhouse with his son, Taylor. His daughter, Whitney, graduated from Southern Nazarene University and works as an event planner.
