72562 ART AND ILLUSTRATION OF WALTER
CRANE by Jeff A. Menges Few artists of Walter Crane’s generation achieved careers as varied and successful as his. This compilation reflects the diversity of his subjects: alphabet books, nursery rhymes, fairy tales, scenes from stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood and illustrations inspired
by the classics of Shakespeare, Hawthorne and Spenser. A prominent figure in the Victorian art world, Crane not only participated in the late 19th century’s publishing revolution but also led the way towards the Golden Age of Illustration. He was instrumental in the transition from simple black-and-white illustrations for children’s books to gallery-quality artwork. This original collection features more than 100 of the artist’s brilliant images. It constitutes a survey of his paintings as well as a visual history of the development of the first colour illustrations. The editor provides an informative introduction that places the artist and his works in historic context. Readers will probably recognise the stunning front cover of horses with webbed feet surfing a gigantic wave, which was used in an award-winning TV advertisement. 109 paperback pages 28cm x 21cm in b/w and delicate colour.

72564 A CHRONOLOGY OF WESTERN
ARCHITECTURE by Doreen Yarwood Do not be repulsed by the rather bleak title, all you lovers of history,
art and, inevitably, its concomitant architecture. Yes, this volume will have an immediate practical appeal to architectural historians and their students but its wide- ranging visual history will also be relished by anyone with an interest in culture and civilisation. No previous knowledge of building or architecture is assumed, and the text is supplemented by a detailed index and a glossary. Clear organisation and layout make this unique volume into an easy-to-use reference work as well as a visual delight. Ranging from 2000 BC to the 1980s, its chronologically arranged photographs and drawings appear in 105 two-page spreads, each representing a specific era, and often covering different regions and countries. Accompanying text comments on architectural details, and places the buildings within the historical, artistic and scientific context of each period. 224 paperback pages with glossary and more than 1,000 illustrations of whole buildings as well as ornamental details, in b/w.

MCNEILL WHISTLER edited by Maria Naylor James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) the painter famously conducted a series of running battles throughout his career, involving himself in one struggle after another with critics, fellow artists, patrons, the art establishment of the day and even with himself, as he was often dissatisfied with his own work.
Whistler the etcher, however, lived a much more peaceful existence. Salons, particularly the Parisian, which refused his paintings gladly exhibited his etchings, and within five years of publishing his first etchings they were earning him critical acclaim, and in 1863 a gold medal at an international exhibition in Amsterdam. The British Museum purchased a number of his etchings for their print room and continued to accumulate them until it was pointed out to the Museum that it was not allowed to buy the art of living artists! This collection features 149 outstanding examples of his work in this genre, mostly reproduced in their original size and in exceptional quality. Here are his much loved wharfs, bridges and street scenes from London, Amsterdam, Paris and Venice, plus portraits, and also included are his famous sets of etchings: the complete French and Thames sets and the two Venice sets. Maria Naylor provides an extensive and insightful introduction to the man and his work, as well as explanatory notes for each print which include Kennedy catalogue number, the medium, original size (in the few cases where the illus. has been reduced) and the set to which it belongs, where applicable. Longstanding customers will recall that Bibliophile has lived in a few London wharf and riverside locations down the years, so we particularly enjoyed the prints of these sites in their Victorian heyday, such as Rotherhithe, Limehouse, Eagle Wharf and Black Lion Wharf. 176pp, 9½”×12" softback. £17.99 NOW £7

73134 LOST PHOTOGRAPHS OF CAPTAIN SCOTT by David M. Wilson
Here is a completely new dimension to the last great expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration and a humbling testament to the men whose graves still lie unmarked in the vastness of what
was known as the Great Alone - Captain Robert Falcon Scott RN and his four intrepid fellow explorers. Until now, the legend of Scott’s fatal expedition has been based upon his diaries and those of his companions, the sketches of his friend Edward Wilson and the celebrated photographs of Herbert Ponting, the expedition’s professional photographer. What has not been recognised is that, during the final fateful months of that polar journey, the principal visual record intended to be left to posterity was provided by Scott himself through his own photography. Confronted with extreme climatic conditions and technical challenges, Scott achieved a series of iconic images remarkable for their technical mastery as well as for their poignancy. Here they are in all their deeply moving grandeur: breathtaking panoramas of the continent, superb depictions of mountains and formations of ice and snow, action photographs of the explorers and their animals on the polar trail. At first, these pictures were fought over, then neglected and finally lost for more than half a century. Now, for the first time, they are resurrected, accurately attributed, catalogued and publicly shown as they were intended to be almost 100 years ago. 191 emotive pages 29cm x 26cm with photographs in b/w, often double page spreads, notes and list of members of the Terra Nova Expedition 1910-13. £30 NOW £10
73068 VICTORIAN COUNTRY HOUSE:
From the Archives of Country
Life by Michael Hall The magazine Country Life was founded in 1897. Over the years, it has built an unrivalled archive of photographs, specially commissioned to illustrate its

of the Victorian era. The great English tradition of the country house reached its apotheosis in the 19th century. The houses, designed by all the most eminent architects of the age, were bigger, more elaborate and more lavishly furnished than ever before. They became a byword throughout Europe and America for luxury, technological innovation and convenience of plan. This new survey by a noted architectural historian presents the fullest record yet published of these houses in England and Wales. It ranges from the High Gothic of Tyntesfield through Ferdinand Rothschild’s flamboyantly French Waddesdon Manor to Philip Webb’s Arts and Crafts interiors at Standen. Out of favour for most of the 20th century, Victorian houses have suffered, more than those from any other period, from sales and demolitions. Country Life’s photographs, such as those of Wrest Park, Thoresby Hall and Hewell Grange in their heyday, are often the only records to have survived. Some have survived with their interiors intact but are little known to the public. These include Flintham Hall and the Earl of Harrowby’s Sandon Hall. Here too are some of the most celebrated houses of the period, from Pugin’s Scarisbrick Hall and Burges’s Cardiff Castle to Bentley’s Carlton Towers and Crace’s astonishing interiors at Longleat. Chronologically arranged for ease of access, this overview spans the decades from 1837 to 1901, and records a major period in British architectural history. 192 pages 31.5cm x 26cm lavishly illustrated with over 150 spectacular photos in colour and b/w. £40 NOW £12.50
73097 IN THE COMPANY OF DALI: The Photographs of
Robert Whitaker by Trevor Legate
‘I am the greatest prostitute in posing for pictures in the world!’ said the phenomenon Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí y Domènech. This was just the sort of pronouncement that the world expected from the flamboyant surrealist painter with
the eccentric moustache and protuberant eyes. At the mere mention of his name, any art lover can call to mind Dalí’s’ Surreal iconography: his melting clocks, flowers sprouting from cracking eggs, disembodied faces floating in a barren landscape. But what kind of man lay behind the public image? What was he like in his domestic environment, relaxing with his wife Gala, or close friends
