Giles Campbell, Managing Director of Pulsar Light of Cambridge talks to A1 Lighting about keeping everything under one roof right here in the UK.

Energy efficiencies and payback times of LED-based solutions makes the lighting industry an exciting place to be today. Large scale façade projects are now cost effective enough to be the preferred solution, and a reliable solution you can fit and forget is a common requirement. Pulsar’s products have been installed in nearly every environmental condition, from the heat and dust of the Emirates, the humidity and wetness of the tropics in Singapore, to our very own consistent-in- its-inconsistency British climate. In all of these situations LED has proven its versatility and continues to reveal itself as a leading solution – so long as the manufacturer constructs a well-formed product ready for the trials of everyday use. Founded by industry visionary Paul

Mardon in Cambridge in 1970, it’s been a long journey since we made our first sound- to-light machine but our core principles remain the same: prioritise quality over price, and make it in the UK. Keeping all of our processing, design, and sales teams all under the same roof fosters an atmosphere of problem solving and drives our product development and innovation. However, keeping everything in the UK

remains a challenge. Low cost overseas labour results in inexpensive products which can appear attractive at first glance,

but we remain focussed on manufacturing the most reliable product we can and having the customisation options to set us apart from our competitors. Sourcing all the suppliers we can in the UK keeps our lead-times low, and having the equipment to work metal, paint, and screenprint our products in-house allows us to customise production runs simply and even cost-effectively because it adds little overhead to our established production infrastructure. Remaining competitive in an increasingly saturated market is tough, but possible. As a manufacturer we are being asked to offer more than just a product, more than just lights. The demand is towards supplying light in the form that meets the customer’s brief and be able to include variations ranging from non-standard mounting options, custom LED configurations, or even a unique paint finish to exactly match their technical requirements.
