Whilst many people will associate Dr. Martens with music and fashion, the company has a deeper and more practical history with a

reputation founded on high quality, durable work boots. When Dr. Martens made its first pair of air-cushioned boots in April 1960, a British classic was created. Over the decades, experience and hands-on expertise has led to an improvement in every aspect of the work boot. The resulting Industrial range of footwear combines comfort, safety and reliability with great style.

The latest addition to the range is a lower cut six-eye boot from the Dr. Martens archive called the 101 ST. This style was often adopted by the police in the past. It still features the slip resistant outsole - but now incorporates a safety toe cap.


RIGHT FOOTWEAR Selection and use of the most appropriate shoes or boots for the workplace is common sense. A case in point is a situation where there is a risk of slipping. Statistics from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) show slipping and tripping to be


the single most common cause of major injury in UK workplaces¹. Combined with falls, it is responsible for more than half of all major (53%) and almost a third of over-three-day (29%) injuries to employees. Whilst employers have a duty to put ‘slip controls’ in place, footwear with slip- resistant properties, such as the new 101 ST boot, has an important part to play in further reducing any risk.

It is vital to ensure that the footwear selected is fit for purpose. Examples of the daily hazards that might be encountered include: wet, hot and cold conditions, electrostatic build-up, slipping, cuts and punctures, falling objects, heavy loads, and metal and chemical splash. As a Safety Basic boot, the 101 ST won’t be suitable for many of these work environments but Dr. Martens has a wide range of shoes and boots in the Industrial range that have safety features

designed to protect against specific conditions. The key is to check the technical information provided and select accordingly.

COMFORT AND STYLE Where there is the risk of a shoe being crushed or hit by an object, or even caught in machinery, safety toecaps are obviously essential but the boot also needs to be comfortable. There is a misconception that work boots, especially those with safety toecaps, will be uncomfortable, but if they are correctly designed you should not be able to feel the toecaps at all.

With comfort in mind, Dr. Martens has also brought out some safety boots in the women’s Industrial collection. The availability of suitable female footwear has always lagged behind for working in an industrial environment. To address this issue, Dr. Martens created two new designs – Izzy ST and Rosa ST – both of which have been built

on a women’s last for an improved fit and accurate sizing. Both styles offer a rare opportunity for women to utilise safety, comfort and style in the often uninspiring industrial footwear market.

As with all safety equipment, the key is to buy from a reputable manufacturer. Any protective equipment, including shoes, should meet European Standards. Dr. Martens’ Industrial Range carries the fixed European standard mark EN345 or the more recent EN ISO 20345.
