Tier 3 – the water industry’s specialist contractors

Over the following pages we take a look at the 30 leading Tier 3 contractors – who they are and what they do. These contractors mostly offer specialised services

TIER 3

– the leading 30, in fact – in this supplement.

contractors are the lynchpin of the water industry’s supply chain and, for the first time, we have included a special section devoted to Tier 3 contractors

Below you can see how some of our featured Tier 3 contractors are performing. Unfortunately we have not been able to include some companies’ figures as they were not filed with Companies House. In defining our Tier 3 companies from Tier 1/2, a cut-off maximum turnover of £24M has been used. Based on turnover, PN Daly tops

our Tier 3 league with just over £24M, closely followed by DCT Civil Engineering (£21.6M) and third- placed Seymour Civil Engineering (£20.8M).

When it comes to pre-tax profit then the top spot goes to Peter Duffy with £1.8M. It’s interesting to note that only three of the compa- nies listed featured in the table are showing a pre-tax loss, no mean feat in the current economic cli- mate. ACWA has the highest return on capital at just over 88%, while DCT Civil Engineering has the top sales per employee figure at £202,200.

ACWA Services ACWA has had strong growth in the municipal and industrial wastewater treatment sectors with a particular focus on its Nitreat nitrate reduction technology and the Amtreat high- rate ammonia removal process. The company expects water sec- tor performance over the next 12 months, at the mid-point of AMP5, to continue to grow as core spend- ing plans start to mature. Activity levels towards the end of AMP5 are predicted to slow down as the industry progresses its preparations for AMP6. “The totex approach is designed to encourage adoption of innovative solutions, something that we believe will foster widespread interest in our technologies.” The company is also preparing for the new retail water market, which will enable all business customers to switch water supplier. “We believe our comprehensive suite of technologies means we are ideally placed to partner with new market entrants. “We also anticipate that climate change, the drive to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency, teamed with tighter regulation and an ongoing focus on cost efficiency, will drive adoption of advanced technologies.”
