those charging fees, the most common amount charged was between $51 and $100 as 36% of ADs said their schools charged in this range. For the 2012-13, 66.4% of ADs surveyed said their schools do not charge sports fees, while 33.6% do. The most common amount col- lected was again between $51 and $100. If we look closer at just public schools, in 2011-12,


most public school ADs don’t ask athletes for participa- tion fees. Of the 34% that do collect fees, 18% charge less than $25 and 31% charge $26-$50. For the 2012- 13 survey, 28.7% collect sports fees from their athletes while 71.3% do not. And of those that do charge fees, 30.3% charge between $26-$50 and 31.6% charge be- tween $51-$100. For private schools ADs responding to the 2011-12


survey, the data shows that private schools are more like- ly to charge participation fees than their public school counterparts as 48% said they charge participation fees. And the fees are higher as well, with one in eight pri- vate schools responding in 2011-12 charging over $200 compared to only 3% of public schools, and 47% charge more than $100 compared to 22% of public schools. In 2012-13, even more private schools ADs (56.8%) said they charged participation fees. And of those that col- lected fees, 37.5% said they charged between $51-$100 and 39.1% said they charged between $101-$200.


Expected Construction or Renovation


When looking at survey results from 2011-12, most


ADs said they did not expected to make signifi cant in- vestments in new construction in the next three years. For instance, only 12.6% said they will invest in new gymnasium construction while an even smaller percent- age, 3%, said their schools will be building a swimming pool sometime in the next three years. A larger percent- age of ADs said they schools will invest in renovation or upkeep of both court and track and fi eld resurfacing — 31.5% and 25.7% respectively. In 2012-13, we see essentially the same story. Overall, 13.3% said they will be investing in a new gymnasium; 13.9% said they will be installing artifi cial turf and 32.9% said they will be resurfacing courts.


If you compare public school AD responses from the two survey years, you also see different story. For instance, in 2011-12, 11.5% of ADs said their schools would be in- vesting in new gymnasium construction and 14.6% said they would be installing artifi cial turf. A few more said they would be investing in court resurfacing (29.8%) and track and fi eld resurfacing (26.7%). In 2012-13, 10.9% of public school ADs said their schools would be investing in gymnasium construction, while 13.1% said they would be installing artifi cial turf. Another 33.5% said they would be resurfacing courts and 25.1% said they would be resurfac- ing track and fi eld facilities.

During the 2012-13 school year, 63% of the ADs participating in the Coach and Athletic Director spending survey reported that their student athletes pay a fee to participate in sports programs at their schools. A little over one-third (37%) schools did not charge a participation fee. Broken out by public vs. private schools, on the whole privates tend to charge higher fees to participate in athletic pro- grams. According to the survey results, a wide range of fees are charged, with the most common being $26-50; nearly one-third of public schools’ fees fall into this range. Comparatively, the fee range most often mentioned by private school ADs (21.9%) was $151-200. No schools reporting the 2012-13 school


year survey charged fees in excess of $500. *There were no signifi cant shifts in the overall fee structures re- ported in 2011-12 vs. 2012-13.


For private school ADs participating in the 2011-12


survey, we see that 16.7% will be investing in new gym- nasium construction sometime in the next three years, while 20.3% will invest in artifi cial turf and 2.9% will
