no change to their budgets, nearly the same (45%) saw declines of 2% or more. Compare that to public school ADs responding to the 2012-13 survey and you see that 55.2% said there was little or no change from the previ- ous year, and nearly 15% saw an increase of 2% or more. While 30.1% saw a decrease of 2% or more from the previous year’s budget. Private school ADs responding to the 2011-12 survey said over half — 56.2% — saw little or no change from the previous year’s budget and nearly a quarter — 23.3% — saw an increase in budget over the previous year. While only 9.5% saw a decrease of 2% or more. When looking at private school AD responses to the 2012-13 survey, 56.3% saw little or no change from the previous year and 31.2% saw an increase in budget of 2% or more.


Areas of Spending If you take a closer look at changes in budgets for particular line items, you get a more accurate picture of just where schools are spending more or less for the year. For ADs responding to the 2011-12


survey, the most popular categories for increased spending included helmets and other football equipment. A quarter of all respondents said they will see at least a 2% increase in spending in these areas. Field maintenance equipment is another area of signifi cant increase, with 22.1% of ADs saying they saw this line item increase by of over 2%. Breaking out public school ADs from the overall data for 2011-12, you see almost the same exact percentages in the same exact top spending catego- ries as 26.9% said they expected to see an increase for helmets; 24.4% say they saw an increase for other football equip- ment and 21.7% will see an increase for fi eld maintenance equipment. Private school ADs also said that


football equipment and fi eld main- tenance equipment were top areas

for increases in budget, with 25% saying they will see more money for football equipment and 23.2% say they had more money to spend for fi eld maintenance equip- ment. But topping the list of increases in spending for the 2011-12 academic year was apparel, with 26% of private school ADs saying they will see an increase of at least 2% for this line item. For the 2012-13 survey, the spending categories were tweaked and broadened a bit, but basically followed the same line items. Topping the list of line-item increases was Team Apparel – 32% of those responding said they will see at least a 2% increase this year. This is followed by Outdoor Facility Maintenance, where 25.1% said they will see a budget increase of at least 2%. If you look closer at just public schools, we see that


many ADs reported an increase in available funds for Team Apparel – 30.3% said they will see at least a 2%
