Comparing 2012-13 & 2011-12 Survey Results

This is the second year that Coach And Athletic Direc- tor magazine has conducted a national survey of athletic directors and participation among ADs was up consider- ably. For the 2011-12 survey, 366 athletic directors re- sponded. In 2012-13, 639 ADs participated in the survey. Below are the results when comparing both years of the survey in several key categories and sub-segments.

Sports Program Budget When looking at the data from the 2012-13 survey, we had much larger sample size from which to draw conclu- sions. Of the 639 responses, 518 or 82.1% were from public school ADs and 113 responses or 17.9% were from private schools ADs. When considering the survey 2012-13 results, we fi nd that the vast majority of ADs regardless of school type (69.8%) are managing budgets in the less than $50,000 to $200,000 range. In 2011-12, a nearly identical percenatage — 70.9% — of ADs fell into this budget category. The next largest group for both years are those manag- ing budgets in the $200,001-$500,000 range. In 2012-13, 19.9% of ADs fell into this group. In the previous year, 22.7% managed budgets in this range. The remainder of the ADs — 10.3% in 2012-13 and 6.4% in 2011-12 — reported managing budgets of $500,000 or more. When looking at the breakdown between public and

private schools, we see similar results, indicating there is no real budget differential between the two categories of schools. For the 2011-12 survey, there were 289 public school ADs who responded ( 79%) and 77 private school ADs (21%). In the 2012-13, 518 public school ADs re- sponded (82.1%), and 113 private school ADs (17.9%). Among public school ADs responding to the survey for the 2011-12 academic year, 71.9% managed budgets in the range of less than $50,000 to $200,000. In the most recent survey, 70% of ADs manage budgets of $200,000 or less. Slightly over 22% oversaw athletic department budgets ranging from $200,001 to $500,000 for 2011-12, and 20% in 2012-13. Only 5.9% of public school ADs reported that they managed budgets of $500,000 or more

last year, while 10% report they’re managing budets in this range during the current school year. When it comes to private schools, not much differ- ential can be seen in budget levels between the 2011-12 school year and 2012-13 period.

Athletic Budget Changes When you drill down further and look at how much these budgets increased or decreased over the previous year, you gain a little more insight into larger industry trends. Respondents were asked to answer the question: “How did the athletic department budget for 2011-12 (or 2012-13) change vs. last year?” Looking at the overall responses from the 2011-12

survey, we saw that nearly half said there was little or no change to their budget from the previous academic year. But 19.9% said they saw a decrease of 7% or more and 20.2% said they saw an overall budget decrease of 2-6%. Very few saw any type of increase in budget. Nearly 10% saw an increase of 2-6% and just over 1% saw increases of more than 7%. When analyzing data from the 2012-13 responses, we

see a little different story emerge. There were far few- er respondents reporting they experienced budget cuts and there were more saying they saw budget increases, which echoes the overall economic recovery we are be- ginning to see throughout the nation. Again, the largest category of respondents said they saw little or no change from the previous year’s budget — 55.4%. However, 14.1% said they saw an increase between 2-6%, while nearly 4% saw an increase over 7%. There were still those ADs who experienced bud- get cuts, as 17.4% said they will have a budget that is between 2-6% lower than the previous year and 9.6% said they will see cuts over 7%, but these percentages are signifi cantly fewer than what was reported in the previ- ous year’s survey. If you split out the data and look more closely at pub-

lic schools responding to the 2012-12 survey, we see that, while slightly less than half (47.1%) saw little or
