Morrisons Morrisons is one of the UK’s largest supermarkets and one of UK agriculture’s biggest customers. All of Morrison’s fresh beef, pork and lamb is sourced from British farms, and it’s never been more important to us to Keep Britain Farming.
We buy almost 200,000 cattle direct from British farmers every year, and process them through our wholly-owned Woodhead Brothers abattoirs in Lancashire, Aberdeenshire and Lincolnshire. Because we buy direct from the farmer, with no processor or other “middle-men” we are the only supermarket to employ a dedicated team of livestock buyers. Our buyers are on the road almost every day, visiting suckler farms and fattening units all over England, Scotland and Wales.
Traditional Beef Scheme R
We are huge supporters of the suckler sector with a long-standing reputation for buying the best R and U grade continental steers and heifers for our core range of British beef. Since 2011 we’ve also become a signiflcant buyer of native breed cattle for our Traditional Beef range, available from the butchery counter in over 400 Morrison’s stores around the country.
SIRE
Our Traditional Beef range is built around the Shorthorn breed (commanding a 20p per kg premium over our base price) and we have built a strong partnership with The Beef Shorthorn Society to promote the breed. We are delighted that the 2013 BCMS breed flgures conflrmed that over the past two years the Shorthorn has become the fastest growing native breed with a massive 18% jump in births.
Rothesay Eildon
Bred at our own farm at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Rothesay Eildon is the result of a signiflcant investment in native breeds by Morrisons. Speciflcally targeted at the suckler cow sector, the bull makes the best of the shorthorns breed’s maternal character for those wishing to breed their own replacement females, yet still boasts a Terminal Index in the top 1% of the breed.
In another flrst, Eildon has been independently ranked for Feed Conversion Efflciency by the Beef Improvement Group. It’s all part of our investment in the Morrisons Farming Programme, aiming to create a sustainable increase in profltability for every part of the Morrisons beef supply chain.
