HEAT DETECTION AND SERVICE TIME

Accurate heat detection and timing of service are two factors that are absolutely key to the success of AI in a beef breeding programme. This section looks to highlight how accurate heat detection and timing of service can help improve performance in your beef breeding herd.

ACCURATE HEAT DETECTION:

• Relies on regular observations of the breeding group

• Ideally you should observe breeding cows/heifers for heat, three times per day, early in the morning, midday and late in the evening as it gets dark

• Observation periods should last for 15-20 minutes

• Heat detection aids such as Estrus Alert, tail paints and chalks can improve the effectiveness of heat detection, especially for those cows that are in standing heat when you are not around

• Standing heat is what you are looking for – the cow standing when ridden by a herdmate. The pictures illustrate what you should be looking for when detecting heats

SERVICE TIME

It is incredibly important to serve the breeding animal at the correct time, to ensure the semen is in the correct place, at the optimum time for her to conceive and become pregnant. The ideal time to serve a breeding cow or heifer is 12 hours after standing heat.
