“It is not hard to see the

improved quality of heifers” Jonathan Shepherd, Field House Farm, East Yorkshire, 60 commercial cows

At Field House Farm we have now been using Cogent Sexed semen for the past three years. It has given me the ability to breed heifers from specific sires and specific cows to enable me to produce the highest quality suckler cow possible. It is clear to gain the good conception rates you have to handle and thaw the semen correctly as per the Cogent guidelines and have the animal in place where you can monitor them regularly throughout the day.

The reason we use sexed semen is to breed the heifer replacements from a bull that is suited to producing heifers for suckler replacements. The biggest advantage with sexed semen is that it gives you a heifer calf bred the way that you want it to be bred. It is not hard to see the improved quality of heifers from the AI bred progeny compared to those from the stock bull.
