www.avm-mag.com Robert Sphar CEO Precision Turbines BIZAV
In your opinion, what is the state of the aviation maintenance industry? The aviation maintenance industry is healthy on the macro scale. As more MRO’s become specialized in airframes and engines, there may soon be a bifurcation between those that do certain or specialized repairs and those MRO’s that can offer an a la carte menu of good quality services in one location or through a network. What were the biggest developments for your company in 2012? Our company is excited about the transition from paper to electronic records and documents. There are myriad platforms out there for consumption, built by folks who have industry experience and have paired that experience and knowledge into excellent programs. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the MRO industry in the last several years? There has been more consolidation and leveraging of services. MRO’s are realizing that the can have “jacks-of-all-trades” under one roof. This is incredibly appealing to operators looking to control costs and minimize downtimes. OEM have also shown more interest in the MRO market. What did your company do in 2012 to adapt to changes in the market? We have tried to impress the new efficiencies in the industry into our customer’s minds. The market adapts quickly to inefficiencies and the hard part is turning the big ship with a small rudder. We have kept an eye on our true north and have navigated accordingly. Precision Turbines process of diversification has continued. We have grown from a commercial engine shop to MRO for engines and airframes in both the commercial and government markets. What are the trends, big or small, you are beginning to see in the MRO business? The move toward more firm-fixed pricing on certain work scopes. Quantifying T&M has become easier due to the electronic age we are in. We can easily measure our metrics and have a better grasp on what things cost us. We can then, in turn, pass that on to our customer. How is your company leveraging partnerships and alliances for success? The better companies are utilizing the synergies of partnerships very well. Our company uses partnerships to facilitate maintenance events, meet long and short term goals, and insure we realize the economies of scale available to us. It is the only way to do business in an environment that continues to move at faster rate. The speed of business nowadays has no constant. Be prepared, adapt, or get left behind.
