Competitive Differentiators:

In your opinion, what is the state of the aviation maintenance industry? Growing and will continue to grow in international markets. Growth potential in North America is pretty flat. What were the biggest developments for your company in 2012? GA Telesis integrated vertically into the heavy engine MRO business adding the capability for the overhaul of jet engines. Our agreement to acquire Finnair Engine Services, the engine overhaul unit of Finnair, will allow us to offer our customers a greater diversity of services and cost-savings. By integrating this business with our component repair and spare parts business, we can increase efficiency by building a stronger service product for our airline customer. Something closer to what an OEM might provide to an airline. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the MRO industry in the last several years? Greater participation by the OEMs in the aftermarket. The market has simply grown so large and the aftermarket has become so sophisticated the airframe engine and component OEMs have made significant strides towards supporting customers well beyond the production of new parts. Airlines outsourcing maintenance on a large scale. Airlines are simply outsourcing as much maintenance as possible so that they can focus on being an airline and not a maintenance organization. What is most important to airlines is CASM and controlling that cost is easier with a third-party provider than internally. Maintenance moving to countries with lower labor costs. Labor cost is most often the driver in maintenance. With globalization of our industry the development of maintenance businesses in high-skilled yet low-labor cost countries in Eastern Europe, Asia and South America is increasing and will continue. What did your company do in 2012 to adapt to changes in the market? We spent millions of dollars on capital expenditures to increase and enhance our capabilities in support of new technology. We entered into the engine overhaul business. We offer fixed-cost, pooling and power-by-the hour contracts to our customers to help airlines better control component and repair costs. How is your company leveraging partnerships and alliances for success? Our Air China joint venture, GA Innovation China, is perhaps one of the best examples of this. The power of GA Telesis and the Air China Group and our respective MRO/technical and supply platforms will be an unparalleled force in Asia.

In your opinion, what is the state of the aviation maintenance industry? The MRO industry is constantly changing and carriers must adapt quickly. Consolidation continues to dramatically impact both the demand and supply sides of the industry. MRO products and services are good, but there are always opportunities for improvement. We highly value expertise, and we encourage continued investment in people, facilities, and equipment. Skilled employees, along with good processes and controls, support our top priorities of quality, delivery and cost. What were the biggest developments for your company in 2012? In 2012, United made great progress in upgrading a variety of new standard configurations within our consolidated fleet. Modifications include new flatbed seats, Economy Plus seating, AVOD, DIRECTV, Wi-Fi and larger overhead bins. We also continued retrofits of new avionics equipment, winglets, carbon brakes, and overhead attendant rest compartments in addition to many other enhancements in safety, reliability, efficiency and product appeal. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the MRO industry in the last several years? Demand and capacity continue to be highly variable. Consolidation among OEMs or MROs continues to cause change either in expanding footprints and product lines, or reducing competition. OEMs also continue to expand their aftermarket scope. What did your company do in 2012 to adapt to changes in the market? We expanded our quality oversight to ensure that our requirements are continually met during periods of major change. We also worked closely with our suppliers to secure capacity to support our demand. As providers have expanded scope, we have pursued synergies in bundled products and services. What are the trends, big or small, you are beginning to see in the MRO business? Many MROs are outsourcing more types of work to service providers, creating additional tiers of quality oversight requirements. How is your company leveraging partnerships and alliances for success? Our global network with our Star Alliance partners is a great success. We have successful partnerships with providers in cost-per-hour and cost-per-landing maintenance agreements where we both enjoy the benefits of high quality and reliability.
