Lenses explained

One of the main advantages of a digital SLR or compact system camera over a compact camera is the ability to swap lenses so you can pick the best lens for the subject you’re photographing. Some will allow you to fi t loads into the frame, others to get really close to your subject.

Built-in focus motor Some lenses incorporate a motor within the lens to drive the autofocusing to deliver near- silent and smooth focusing

Lens mounts Each camera manufacturer has its own lens mount, so make sure when buying a lens that it has the correct fi tting

Magnifi cation factor Compared to a 35mm negative, digital sensors tend to be small, so lenses don’t provide the same fi eld-of-view as they would do normally, with most digital SLRs or compact system cameras magnifying the focal length

Which lens is right for you? Telephoto

zoom If you want to shoot sport, action and wildlife shots, then a telephoto zoom lens is the perfect choice to go with your digital SLR. A typical zoom lens range is around 70-300mm, going much further than the reach offered by an 18-55mm lens. Telephoto zooms can magnify camera shake, so look out for models that feature Image Stabilisation.

Wide-angle

zoom If you like photographing landscapes and architecture, then you’ll love a wide-angle zoom lens. These lenses make subjects seem further away, allowing you to fi t plenty into the frame for stunning vistas. Popular options are 10-20mm and 10-24mm, and while this may seem only slightly wider than an 18-55mm, it makes a massive difference.

Superzooms

If you’re going to be travelling around, you don’t necessarily want a bag full of lenses to carry. Superzooms though are a perfect all-in-one solution to partner your digital SLR. These lenses cover a massive focal range, typically around 18-270mm, so you’ll be able to shoot a variety of subjects without the need for another lens to carry with you.

Prime lenses

Fixed-focal-length lenses – or prime lenses as they’re often referred to – offer larger maximum apertures than most zoom lenses, allowing you to achieve really shallow depth-of- fi eld shots.

Because they’re a fi xed focal length, they will deliver superior optical quality compared to a zoom and they come in a range of focal lengths.
