LINKEDIN DISCUSSION Lowering Iron Content
On the Foundry and Diecaster Network on LinkedIn, a member asked, “How does low- ering Fe [iron]content from over 0.5% to 0.2% affect the solidifi cation character- istics of pressure diecast Al - 9Si alloys?” Below are excerpts of some of the discussion points:
“Fe content doesn’t affect
solidifi cation characteristics. And in pressure die cast, Fe content must be between 05.% to 1.0%. Lower Fe content rises problem of stacking.” —Pravin K.

“Fe level in Aluminum alloy should be well within 0.5% to 1% for PDC as Pravin mentioned. Lower than this will adhere on the die steel during the production. Motor rotors are generally cast with Pure aluminum only. Gating should be better/larger to reduce the gate velocity, thereby soldering is mini- mized.” —Surianarayanan C.

“Lowering the iron content will allow you to obtain better mechani- cal properties (especially elonga- tion), but you will get problems with die sticking. You can avoid them by increasing the Mn content (like in the 365 or A365 alloys) and add higher Sr like in the Mercalloy 367 and 368. “ —Martin H.
