TAXIS Iconic black cab maker saved

Unite welcomed the news in February that Chinese manufacturer, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group is to acquire London Taxi Company (LTI), makers of the black cab.

Unite London cabbies and the LTI Coventry workers campaigned to keep production in Coventry and the black cab on the road.

Unite regional officer Peter Coulson said, “Black cabs have been built in Coventry since 1948. Without the Coventry base the vehicle would have lost its unique character. Unite has been in constructive talks with Geely and we look forward to a strong working relationship in the future.”

Unite has warned the owners of Pilkington Glass staff are ready to take strike action over attempts to bully and intimidate them out of their hard earned pensions.

The company is preparing to freeze pensionable pay at the workers’ salary level as of April 30, 2013, which would erode past and future benefits of all members of the scheme regardless of age or length of service. The pensionable

FOOD Heinz UK jobs talks

Unite called for an urgent meeting with HJ Heinz management and the consortium acquiring the company, to seek assurances over UK jobs in February.

Unite national officer Jennie Formby

said, “The 3,000 Unite members working for the company in the UK will want more detailed assurances their jobs and sites will remain secure.

“Unite will be seeking an early meeting with senior management to allow us to explore in greater detail what impact, if any, this acquisition will have for the UK business.”

salary will be fixed, so any increase in pay resulting from annual reviews or promotion will not be pensionable after April. The company has also written to all staff warning them that if they don't agree to the change, their pay will be frozen anyway by refusing to give them any kind of pay increase in the future.

To make matters worse certain managers have been frightening employees saying if they don’t sign,

they could be dismissed and re- engaged. The company has even refused to provide independent financial advice to members seeking to understand the company’s proposals.

Unite national officer Linda McCulloch said, “Staff are furious. Unite will fight the company’s bullying behaviour until managers get around the table and negotiate a sensible and fair solution.”
