GETTING ANGRY TO SAVE LIVES

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt’s decision in January to downgrade the A&E and maternity units at Lewisham hospital in South London was ‘a kick in the teeth’ for 750,000 local residents, said Unite.

Unite national officer Rachael Maskell said, “Hunt is creating chaos so the NHS fails which will then be used as justification for the mass privatisation programme – the central tenet of the Health and Social Care Act.

“The fight will go on to protect health services from the chaotic and pro- privatisation policies that this government has pursued since May 2010.”

AWB POSH DINERS SUPPORT POVERTY WAGES

Unite members staged a protest in February outside swanky London hotel the Savoy – to ratchet up the pressure to save the Agricultural Wages Board (AWB).

Unite protested outside as posh diners lived it up at the Fresh Produce Consortium annual dinner the Savoy Hotel. The Fresh Produce Consortium represents growers in the horticultural industry and members include Asda, Marks and Spencer, Morrison’s and Tesco. It supports the abolition of the AWB.

Unite argues these supermarkets want to nail down agricultural wages to poverty levels to boost their already handsome profits.

Unite national officer Julia Long said, “Farming minister David Heath has reneged on his previous position of supporting the AWB to do the bidding of the major supermarkets whose executives will be living it up at the Savoy, as they discuss how to impoverish those working on the land in all weathers.”
