It couldn't be more urgent for you to have your own media voice. Together we face the greatest threat in decades, in assaults on welfare and services, pensions, jobs and pay. A mass transfer of wealth is taking place from the majority into the hands of a small minority who want to avoid tax and ramp up their profits. But how do we turn the current situation around?

TheMorning Star newspaper – Britain’s only daily national that stands four-square behind working people and our communities – is part of the solution. It was founded as the Daily Worker in 1930 amid the ravages of the Great Depression. The government responded by cutting welfare and spending. But it only made things worse.

When nine people gathered together on December 31, 1929 to produce the first edition by candlelight they did not know what the future had in store. But they did know the importance of a daily newspaper to give voice to an alternative.

Today, the case for The Morning Star, co-operatively owned by its readers and with its heart in the labour movement, remains as strong. Time and again we have seen how vicious the corporate-owned media can be to us when we “step out of line.”

They have little interest in portraying trade unionists in a fair light. The Morning Star does, but it has to be bigger and better to do the job. To get there we need you. Unite is already a shareholder of the People’s Press Printing Society that owns us.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey is also urging you to become daily readers and take up shares. With your backing we can raise the capital we need to confront the rich and powerful. They’ve had it all their own way for far too long.
