Family in chaos – the Counihans (l–r) Isabel, Vinny, AJ, Orla, Anthony, Aiden, Sarah and Moby the cat

told if we market the land in Ireland according to Brent Council’s instructions, they would reinstate our housing benefit. Why weren’t we told this in April?” asks Isabel.

The family’s campaign for justice has since come to the attention of some prominent people.

“John McDonnell MP has tabled an early day motion in Parliament,” explains Isabel. “We’ve also started a campaign and benefits

advice group locally to help others.”

So as we go to press the Counihans have their housing benefit back, but they’re still living in temporary accommodation; still owe £26,000 not including other debts accrued, Isabel is still waiting for her operation; and the family is still ‘in chaos’ as Isabel puts it.

“I just want a normal life – a three- bedroomed property with a rent we can afford. I want the kids back into a routine.
