JAP  Volume 7 Issue 1 The Editorial Board From the Consulting Editor

Prof Baha Al-Shaikh Consulting Editor Welcome to the first Journal of Anaesthesia Practice issue of 2013. This Jan/Feb issue is full of interesting material for everyone. The usual News section is followed by a light hearted paper from Dr Mohammad and colleagues detailing

some mnemonics and acronyms in anaesthesia including a “The 21st century definition of an anaesthetist”. Dr Seetal Patel describes her career journey as a medical trainee and how she is managed to “cross the blood-brain barrier”. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is becoming more and more popular as an alternative to aortic valve replacement in high risk patients. Dr G Rajendran and Dr S Webb

discuss the peri-operative management of patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing TAVI. Dr Paremal and colleagues provide a case report of septic pulmonary

embolism following chronic IV drug abuse. Dr Robson et al offer a cautionary note regarding managing patients with splenectomy and describing a clinical case of overwhelming post-splenectomy infection. Drs Packer and Strätling describe the rare hereditary syndrome Andersen-Tawil Syndrome and the challenges faced during anaesthesia. Last but not least, Karim Rizkallah reviews a new book, Tracheotomy Management – A Multidisciplinary Approach. I do hope you enjoy reading this issue of JAP.
