such a relatively rare condition mean that this is unlikely to change in the near future. The latest guidance outlines the important points that should be considered when making this choice. Despite adequate immunisation and antibiotic prophylaxis,
sepsis can still occur in asplenic patients and carries a very high mortality. For this reason it is imperative to have a high level of suspicion in asplenic patients, and to have a low threshold to institute early, aggressive treatment. ■

Dr Timothy Robson Dr Robson has recently moved
on from doing his Foundation Year 1 (PGY1) at South Tyneside Hospital, working in the ITU, to his Foundation Year 2 (PGY2) in
Palmerston North, New Zealand. He is currently working in General Practice in Pahiatua Medical Centre. He is keen to spend a year working in a rural hospital in South Africa, and then return to the UK to start specialty training in 2014. Dr Robson has an interest in music, and sings with and conducts the Renaissance Singers of Palmerston North. When he isn’t exercising his vocal cords, he enjoys exercising the rest of his body by playing cricket, and through a newly-developed interest in skiing, since being in New Zealand.
