29 DECEMBER: LARNACA, CYPRUS A diplomatic incident erupted when Menha Mahrous Bakhoum, Egypt's Ambassador to Cyprus, was caught on CCTV shouting at, and then slapping, a police offi cer at Larnaca Airport. The Ambassador claimed that she had been subjected to both verbal and physical humiliation by airport security personnel who had asked her to remove her boots despite her diplomatic status. The Cypriot Foreign Minister, Erato Kozakou Marcoullis, later apologised to the Ambassador for the incident.
30 DECEMBER: EUREKA, CALIFORNIA A suspicious device, secreted beneath a vending machine at Arcata/Eureka airport, was neutralised by the bomb squad.
30 DECEMBER: ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI
David LaPrade, 24, allegedly broke into a Pasta House outlet at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and raided the bar. However, he left behind his mobile phone and
his alcohol-soaked underwear. His activities were caught on CCTV and he was later arrested in an intoxicated state.
31 DECEMBER: CHICAGO, ILLINOIS An inert World War II bazooka round was found in an item of checked baggage at Chicago O’Hare.
4 JANUARY: SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA
Kim Chang-geun, 57, stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife during a rally at Gimpo Airport. A Japanese offi cial was due to arrive at the airport and the protestors were taking the opportunity to demand an offi cial apology for Japan's war crimes during World War II.
13 JANUARY: TAIPEI, TAIWAN Four bullets were found in a seatback pocket of a China Airlines fl ight after it landed in Taipei from Los Angeles.
14 JANUARY: BHUBANESHWAR, INDIA The decomposed body of a middle- aged woman was found hanging from a tree in an overgrown area in between the old and new airport terminals. It appeared the body had been there for two weeks.
15 JANUARY: ROME, ITALY An unscheduled protest by employees of the duty free shops at Fiumicino Airport led to some passengers missing their fl ights as well as delays at check-in.
7 JANUARY: AUSTIN, TEXAS Alex Jones, an American talk show host known to be critical of the TSA, became embroiled in an argument at a checkpoint when he was asked to remove his shoes and he queried why he was being discriminated against when other passengers did not have to remove theirs.
17 JANUARY: PERTH, AUSTRALIA Actress Elizabeth Hurley allegedly swore at and shoved TV reporter Caty Price who was trying to question Hurley’s fi ancé, Shane Warne, about a cricket match as they walked through the airport.
28 JANUARY: GUERNSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS All commercial fl ights were suspended at Guernsey Airport for nearly three hours after a Flybe aircraft was found to have been left open overnight.
29 JANUARY: DENVER, COLORADO
Phoday Dumbuya, 25, escaped from law enforcement at the airport
before security guards were able to put him on an aircraft for deportation back to The Gambia.
29 JANUARY: RUSSIA Reports emerge that Tatiana Kozlenko, an Aeroflot flight attendant, started an internet campaign to clear her name after she was sacked for allegedly raising her middle finger to passengers on a flight. The gesture was captured in a photo that went viral. However, Kozlenko claimed that the photo was not her hand and that was it was not even on an Aeroflot aircraft. (Stop Press: She was later reinstated by Aeroflot)
31 JANUARY: BOGOTA, COLOMBIA 80 Spanish passengers began a protest when they arrived at Bogota's El Dorado Airport only to be told that their luggage was nowhere to be found. They had flown to Bogota from Madrid via Quito.
