27 DECEMBER: ENUGU, NIGERIA Four people, believed to be members of Boko Haram, were arrested en route to Akanu Ibiam International Airport and found to be carrying a range of explosive products probably intended to be used to bomb the airport.


31 DECEMBER: HOUSTON, TEXAS Khaled Ibrahim filed a lawsuit against United Airlines claiming that flight attendants on a Houston to Lima, Peru, flight on 1 January 2012, had “assaulted and battered” him as a result of their alleged racial profiling.


8 JANUARY: MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA Anthony Palazzolo, 17, was escorted off a Jetstar flight when it landed in Melbourne after he had tweeted, ''I'm actually determined to bomb Sydney airport it's actually so s---. Melbourne's airport is legit perfection compared to this. whOOPS'', before boarding the flight in Sydney.


9 JANUARY: URUMQI, XINJIANG, CHINA Wang, 28, was jailed for three years and two months for falsely claiming she would detonate a bomb on a plane flying to Urumqi in 2011. She was on the flight and had passed a note to fellow passengers claiming she had TNT on the plane.


16 JANUARY: DOHA, QATAR Reports emerge that a man was sentenced to a year in jail and fined QR1,000 (approx. $275) for his drunken behaviour on board a Qatar Airways flight en route to Doha. He is reported to have kissed a flight attendant on the lips, stripped naked in the toilets and then entered the cabin, before slapping another flight attendant on her back.


17 JANUARY: ATLANTA, GEORGIA Andre Smith, a 25-year-old American football player for the Cincinnati Bengals, was arrested when a .380 calibre handgun was found in his hand baggage when he tried to board a flight at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport.


17 JANUARY: SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA A US Marine recruit was arrested when he was found running across a runway at the airport.


22 JANUARY: DETROIT, MICHIGAN Shoshana Hebshi filed a discrimination suit in the U.S. District Court in Detroit against the U.S. Transportation Security Administration. Hebshi, of mixed Arab- Jewish heritage, claims she was strip- searched after being led in handcuffs off a Frontier Airlines flight operating from Denver to Detroit on 11 September 2011.

5 DECEMBER: BRUSSELS, BELGIUM Branislav Milinkovic, the 52-year-old Serbian ambassador to NATO, jumped 10 metres to his death from a car park at Brussels Airport during a conference of NATO foreign ministers. Serbia's Assistant Foreign Minister for Security Policy, Zoran Vujic, was alleged to be with Milinkovic when he suddenly jumped.


28 JANUARY: ROME, ITALY Italy’s highest criminal court ruled that a stray missile was the cause of the crash of an Itavia DC-9 on 27 June 1980. The aircraft, en route from Bologna to Palermo, crashed off the coast of Ustica killing all 81 on board. For years the case has been shrouded in mystery and conspiracy theories have been mooted. Compensation to the victims’ families may now be payable.


6 DECEMBER: PITTSBURGH Smoke was seen coming from toilets at the airport and, when the source was identified to be a charred satchel concealed behind a plumbing access panel in the restroom, the bomb squad was called.


6 DECEMBER: SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Reports emerge that a Chinese man had attempted to enter the US on 21 October when he had stowed away on board a China Airlines flight. He had originally boarded the flight legitimately in Shanghai when he was destined for Taipei. Once in Taipei he failed to disembark and hid himself inside an electrical closet where he remained for the aircraft’s subsequent flight to San Francisco. He tried to enter the US using a forged passport.


29 JANUARY: WASHINGTON DC A judge ordered that Syria pay $1 billion to the families of 26 victims of the 1985 terrorist attacks on Rome and Vienna airports. Albeit carried out by the Abu Nidal Organisation, U.S. Magistrate Judge John M. Facciola said the attacks could not have taken place without Syria's direct support.


22 DECEMBER: BEIRUT, LEBANON Mixed reasons were reported for a Ukrainian woman stripping naked at Rafik Hariri International Airport. Some indicated she was protesting against the smoking ban in place at the airport; others said she was protesting against her deportation.
