Coherent acquires
Lumera Laser
Coherent has acquired Lumera Laser, a specialist in ultrafast lasers for micro-electronics and precision materials processing. The acquisition complements Coherent’s existing portfolio of industrial ultrafast lasers and broadens the company’s product capabilities in these markets. Coherent expects Lumera will play a central role in the expansion of its ultrafast product and market growth through its new product capabilities and applications expertise. Lumera’s Rapid and Hyper- Rapid picosecond products are used in applications such as speciality marking and engraving, photovoltaic manufacturing, glass cutting and LED scribing. ‘We are excited to have Lumera as part of Coherent,’ said Mark Sobey, executive vice president of Coherent. ‘With a combined industrial picosecond installed base of more than 500 systems in 24/7 production, we intend to leverage our worldwide sales and service network and joint technology expertise so that these markets will benefit from the broadest selection of ultrafast laser solutions backed by the service support for which Coherent is known.’
Latin move for FLIR Systems
Sensor designer FLIR Systems has been awarded a contract by Brazil’s Special Secretariat for the Security of Major Events (SESGE), valued at $12.5 million. Flir’s StarSAFIRE 380 HD and StarSAFIRE 230 HD advanced imaging systems will primarily be used to support the security plan for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics sporting events, as developed by SESGE – a commission set up by the Brazilian federal government under the Ministry of Justice, which includes the provision of state-of-the- art airborne surveillance.
‘This contract illustrates that our long-term
strategy in international military and security markets is succeeding,’ said Earl Lewis, president and CEO of FLIR. ‘Latin America has been an area of investment for our government systems business, and we are delighted to provide the Brazilian government with these surveillance systems.’
l FLIR Systems has completed its previously announced acquisition of Lorex Technology for $1.32 per share, representing a total purchase price of $60 million. In October 2012, thermal imaging specialist FLIR announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire Lorex.
The transaction was completed by a FLIR subsidiary purchasing all the outstanding shares of Lorex, resulting in Lorex becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of FLIR. The acquisition was completed upon receipt of final court approval from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice of the proposed plan of arrangement. The plan of arrangement was approved by Lorex’s shareholders in December. Lorex, based in Ontario, produces home security video surveillance systems that can be installed by the user as well as providers of video surveillance products and security system integrators.
