LEADER ROB COPPINGER
Best of the West
It’s that time of year again and a single event, Photonics West 2013, dominates – but this time its February as the industry travels to the hilly city that is San Francisco two weeks later than normal. If you didn’t catch our Photonics West preview in the December/ January edition of Electro Optics then you can see a wide range of products ahead of the industry event in this month’s issue. As well as Photonics West, this February issue also has features about CO2
lasers,
metrology and lithography. Greg Blackman looks at how extreme ultraviolet lithography will ensure Moore’s prediction of computing clock speed doubling every 18 months continues to be true. The EUV source will mean lithography manufacturing processes will be able to produce tiny, tiny structures in silicon to deliver the clock speed doubling for many years to come. At another end of the spectrum is the CO2
laser. A mature
technology, Synrad talks to us about how CO2
is continuing to improve and keep its potential competitors at bay. Maintaining any leadership position means proving that you’re the best and measurement is key to that. In this issue we look at metrology for lasers and the use of electro optics systems for measuring other processes. We’ll be at Photonics West, so please do come and find us on the exhibitor’s floor in the south hall at booth 2307. I’ll be happy to talk to you about your perspectives on the year ahead.
