TECHNOLOGY SHOW PREVIEW: SPIE PHOTONICS WEST 2013 PART II Lasers at the bay

This year SPIE’s Photonics West is two weeks later than usual, but the most influential conference for biophotonics, biomedical optics, industrial lasers, high-power laser manufacturing, optoelectronics and green photonics still represents four days of 1,300 exhibitors, 4,400 papers, 18 plenary presentations, 40 technical events, and much more. Here’s part two of our preview

Avantes Avantes will introduced the AvaSpec-CompactLine, a range of spectrometers that are smaller than ever, but with the all the functionality one would expect. Ideal for OEM applications in small devices, they are versatile solutions for ultraviolet, visible and near- infrared applications. The AvaSpec- Mini is about the size of a deck of

produces and integrates optics, mechanics and electronics into system solutions for its customers. As OEM partners from prototyping to volume production, the Berliner Glas companies serve customers in various markets, the semiconductor industry, medical technology, metrology, laser and space technology, analytics, defence and the display industry. www.berlinerglas.com

cards, yet features a resolution of up to 0.2 nm. It weighs only 155g and is equipped with an industry standard SMA-905 connector. The optional I/O port adapter enables four input/output channels that can be configured as trigger input, shutter and light source control, as well as general-purpose I/O pins. In mid-2013, Avantes will introduce the AvaSpec-Micro. High-resolution spectroscopy in a device the size of a matchbox, weighing only 58g. www.avantes.com

Berliner Glas will present a broad spectrum of tailor-made OEM solutions at Photonics West. The company provides optical key components, assemblies and systems as well as refined technical glass. The company develops,

West. The sensor applies MEMs emitter and lead selenide detector technologies to meet the accuracy and reliability requirements of HVAC applications. The easily controllable MEMs emitter stabilises quickly, minimising power consumption, and offers a

peak optical output near the CO2 absorption band. Cal Sensors can support prototyping to high- volume manufacturing requests. www.calsensors.com

Element Six will showcase its CVD synthetic diamond as an enabling technology for high power laser systems, highlighting the material’s benefits. These benefits include broad optical transmission spectrum, the highest- known thermal conductivity and resilience. A commercially available engineering material, Element Six synthetic diamond exploits the material’s properties to deliver technical benefits for high-power lasers. At Photonics West, Element

Ibsen Photonics will show two new spectrometers. The Freedom spectrometers combine compactness (28 x 45 x 16mm) and low stray light performance and a 1nm resolution. The Rock NIR 900- 1700 spectrometer offers higher throughput, typically four times higher than conventional spectrographs, due to a low f-number of 2.2 and its transmission grating. The Rock NIR is for OEM integrators of analytical instruments because

Six will be conducting multiple demonstrations highlighting the thermal and mechanical capabilities of CVD synthetic diamond as well as its transparency – which includes hard X-rays and a very wide wavelength range from the ultra violet to the microwaves part of the spectrum. www.e6.com

The Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS will be presenting an extremely miniaturised near-infrared spectrometer at Photonics West. This device enables analysis of gaseous, liquid and solid materials immediately on site instead of taking samples for lab analysis. The optical bench is smaller than a sugar cube and thus it might fit into mobile devices as well as in automated process analysis tools. www.ipms.fraunhofer.de

of the flexibility in design. The spectrometers can be fitted with a range of different InGaAs detectors and supplied with or with-out electronics from Ibsen. www.ibsenphotonics.com

Hamamatsu Photonics will be introducing at Photonics West the latest range of Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCL) for laser gas analysis. Other detectors on display include photodetectors, image sensors, cameras and light sources, avalanche photodiodes, multi-pixel photon counters (silicon photomultipliers), hybrid photodetectors, linear array photomultiplier tubes, MEMS mirror and module and infrared detectors, among others. Hamamatsu will also introduce a new range of CCD, CMOS and InGaAs image sensors in linear and 2D formats. www.hamamatsu.eu

IdQuantique’s id220-FR is for single photon detection in free- running mode (900 to 1700nm). It provides a solution for applications in which asynchronous photon ➤
