Spring Planted Bulbs

ASARUM Size: as noted “Wild Ginger” The attractive evergreen foliage and curious flowers of asarums attract collectors worldwide. They are among the most beautiful ground- covers and foliage accents for woodlands and shady sites. Plant the rhizomes just below the soil surface in moist, well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. Some species are slow growing, but are well worth the wait. In colder areas they may lose their leaves in the winter.

A. arifolium #SAS48 Heartleaf Ginger. Native to the U.S. from Vir- ginia to Louisiana. The evergreen leaves vary, but are mainly arrowhead-shaped and about 5 inches long, accented with lighter gray-green patterns or veins. Flowers shaped like little brown jugs appear in late spring. Deserving of wider cultivation due to its easy growth habit. Clump-forming plants grow up to 18 inches wide and are both deep-rooted and drought- resistant. Top size bare root plants. A. canadense #SAS49 Canadian Wild Ginger. A widely grown ginger that faithfully returns year after year, quickly forming large colonies. The ground-covering kidney-shaped, rich green leaves are up to 5 inches long, held on softly hairy stalks. Brownish-purple, bell-shaped flowers are mostly concealed by the foliage. Stands up well to heat, cold and drought. Native to Eastern North America. 2½ inch pots.

A nice accent in rock gardens and borders that stays attractive all year around. Bears small, bell-shaped, maroon flowers in spring. Prefers rich, organic, moist but well-drained soil that’s slightly acidic. 3½ inch pots.
